The IRDM PRO SLIM is a fourth-generation SSD on an M.2 connector that, thanks to NVMe technology, has very fast read and write speeds and the right dimensions to fit the drive into PlayStation™5 * consoles, PCs and laptops.
For the latest generation PlayStation™ * console, we recommend using an IRDM PRO SLIM SSD which meets all the technical requirements of the console manufacturer. The IRDM PRO M.2 (with heatsink) will also fit the console, but the height of the heatsink will prevent the installation of a dedicated metal cap protecting the drive in the socket.
Yes and no. An external drive can be used in a PlayStation™ * console, but an external drive will not allow you to use all the features of that console. You can store screenshots, game saves and the games themselves on the external drive, but only those from the previous generation. Games that use next-gen technology and are only dedicated to the PlayStation™5 * will not work on the external drive. They require higher read and write speeds, and this is what the IRDM PRO SLIM drive offers.
The IRDM PRO SLIM SSD has been developed with console users and high-performance desktop and laptop users in mind. The PlayStation™5 * console does not perform so many calculations and all of them are "prepackaged", which means that the drive uses its maximum potential only for a short while, which in turn results in no thermal throttling phenomenon, despite the lack of additional cooling. However, when using the IRDM PRO SLIM drive in a computer or laptop, we recommend the use of additional cooling. Often, the heatsinks present in motherboards are sufficient for optimal operation of the IRDM PRO SLIM drive in the most demanding programmes. This drive is aimed at such users. For users who have a motherboard without a built-in heatsink, we recommend purchasing a drive with a dedicated heatsink - IRDM PRO.
Compared to traditional HDDs and older generations of SSDs, the IRDM PRO SLIM drive has many advantages:
- faster start-up and application loading times,
- lower power consumption,
- higher reliability and durability,
- smaller size and weight especially in comparison to HDD,
- support for demanding tasks such as gaming, graphics and data analysis,
- full compatibility with PlayStation™5 *.
The basic step you need to take before installation is to make sure that the hardware you want to install the IRDM PRO SLIM drive into is technologically compatible. It is essential to check that the hardware has an M.2 connector and supports 4th generation SSDs. The installation of the drive itself is very simple. Once you have located the M.2 connector, simply screw the drive cradle onto the appropriate 80mm length, then simply insert the drive into the M.2 socket at a 45° angle, press down and tighten with the mounting screw.
Hardware that supports older generation drives does not render a newer generation drive inoperable. This technology is backwards compatible, you will notice the difference in speeds. A Generation 4 drive mounted in a Generation 3 slot will operate at maximum Generation 3 speeds. To utilise the maximum potential of the IRDM drive, the entire platform will need to be upgraded.
Goodram and IRDM 4th generation SSDs are some of the most secure solutions for your data. These SSDs have built-in data protection features such as ECC (Error Correction Code) and PLP (Power Loss Protection). These and many other technologies protect your drive, and therefore your data, in emergency situations.
The IRDM PRO SLIM drive differs from other drives in format, interface and read/write speed. The M.2 format means that the drive has a small footprint and fits into thin slots on desktop, console and laptop motherboards. The PCIe 4.0 interface means the drive uses the 4th generation PCIe bus to communicate with the computer, providing much higher bandwidth and lower latency compared to SATA or USB. All of this translates into very high data write and read speeds.
Today's games are taking up more and more storage space. The extra disc in the PlayStation™5 * console significantly increases storage space, allowing more titles to be stored.
The SLIM version of the IRDM PRO drive is designed for users who do not need the additional heatsink that comes with the IRDM PRO drive. The two drives are identical in terms of technology and feature the same performance. It is worth taking care of adequate cooling for the version without a heatsink to avoid the frequent occurrence of thermal throttling.
